The irony of the egg

In an ironic but menopausal moment, I no sooner finished my last post but I headed downstairs. Cooking smells filled the air, and my first conclusion was that my husband, uncharacteristically, had decided to start in making brunch.

Imagine my surprise and dismay to discover the eggs I'd put on to hard boil prior to heading up to write bumping wildly about in what little water remained in the pot. The chronicling of one menopause moment leads to another.

As I was eating dinner tonight (alone, as mr. kenju was out at a meeting) I put 10 eggs on to boil. About 4+ minutes later, I kept hearing noises, as I tried to solve a crossword while eating. I thought it was the cat playing pool in her litter box. Imagine my surprise when I remembered the eggs - by that time boiling dry - just as yours!!

Several months ago, I had the same thing happen, only mine all the water boiled out and they were about to explode when I found them. Due to that episode, I decided I could not leave the kitchen if I had anything on the stove. Imagine my surprise when I decided to wipe out the inside of the refrigerator last week while the eggs boiled, so I would be there. the eggs were fine, the water that I left running in the sink, was NOT. I turned to wet my sponge and there was the water up to the top and running over into the other side of the double sink. I was thankful it was not a single sink, or I would have been mopping the floor.

Can't remember any cooking episodes, but I do remember groceries sitting on the kitchen counter and wondering - who took those out of the fridge? Only to realize I hadn't put them away from my trip to the supermarket.

Hubby made sure we bought a kettle that turns off just after the boil. Hmmmmm - wonder why?

Hope you could rescue those eggs.

Sandra, that one is too funny.

Wendy, Been there, done that too. I'm too crafty in hiding my lapses for my hubby to catch on and catch me at it. The eggs actually came out perfectly--I feared they'd be completely rubbery.

Yes, the stove can be dangerous for some of us! I sometimes turn on the stove to dry my stainless steel pots after washing them. And I can't tell you how many times I've walked out of the kitchen, gone to the computer to work and sometime later (seems like only 3 minutes, but we know it's never 3 minutes!)I start to smell something burning and wondering what's burning outside??? Well I've burned through a couple of pots like this, so now I use a timer! In fact, now I use a timer for just about everything I do!

I have a kettle that stops at the boil, a toaster oven on a timer and a coffee pot that turns itself off, I think they're sure to invent something for the stove soon. the one that scares me is when I take the pot off (as I've set a timer) but forget to turn off the burner. That hasn't happened for a while so I must be getting younger, doing all those brain games.
BTW, eggs will keep cooking if you turn them off and cover them (they need a few minutes first at this altitude).
